End The Fanboy Wars

I long for the day when we’re able to just end the iOS vs. Android fanboy wars.

At the heart they are both mobile operating systems. They have many of the same features. The companies behind these platforms are creating products that compete with one another to get the attention (and money) of tech enthusiasts and laypeople, alike.

However, on a platform level, Android and iOS are hugely different. When we talk about Android’s open source code base, everyone wants to focus on fragmentation and the mess that the carriers and manufacturers create. I think the great part is that we’re finally starting to see some really interesting projects/products emerge:

  • Ouya video game console
  • Nikon Coolpix S800 camera
  • Samsung Galaxy Camera
  • Amazon Kindle Fire eReader and multimedia consumption device. Sure, another “tablet,” but it essentially a fork of the Android OS that is substantially different and has the ability to evolve over time.
  • Instacube - Digital photo frame for Instagram feeds.

And this is only the beginning. I’m optimistic that this trend will continue and we’ll see more and more amazing products built on top of Android. I’m tired of people being snobby about their smartphones and tablets. Let’s accept the differences and move on.
